this recipe is a friend's creation after multiple tweaks and has won a couple of ribbons at fairs

                          Bob's Chocolate Chips

  4 cups  Flour
1  teaspoon  Baking Soda -- rounded
  1  teaspoon  Salt
1  cup  Shortening -- butter flavored
1 1/2  cup Brown Sugar, Packed
  1 tablespoon Vanilla
     1/3 cup Dark Corn Syrup
  2 Medium  Eggs
  12 Ounces  Chocolate Chips
  1 cup  Chopped Pecans

Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Combine flour, soda, and salt.  Beat
Crisco, brown sugar, vanilla, and corn syrup.  Beat in eggs.  Add
combined dry ingredients.  Mix well.  Stir in chips and nuts.  Drop
by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.  Bake 11
minutes, or until light brown.  Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet.
Remove to wire rack. Makes approximately 5 dozen cookies.

Actually they're very dense chewy choco nutty cookies. Yum!

I sure got that wrong! And I call myself a baker...

I thought the crisco would make them light and flaky, and I thought the absence of a leavening agent would make them crispy.

Good point, and now I see that they do have a leaving agent- I missed the baking soda my first read through. Mondays are so rushed for me...

Very interesting variations -- I see a Southern note with the pecans, dark Karo syrup, and butter flavored Crisco. The original Toll House cookie is a New England invention. These cookies are just a couple of ingredients shy of being a chocolate chip pecan pie. :D

Big glass of milk is in order for those babies!
