One day, during the filming of I can’t remember which film, I went back to my hotel and found a message: "Sean Penn called you," with a telephone number. I asked myself which of my friends was playing a trick. And there was a spelling mistake in Sean. I call: "Sean Penn?" "Yeah," replies Sean Penn, grumpily. "It’s Viggo Mortensen. What do you want?" I didn’t even realise I could have been friendlier. (Laughs.) And then, he told me about ‘Indian Runner’. He saw me in ‘Fresh Horses’, a TV film which I had made for HBO. I had a little scene at the end. He sent me the script and I was instantly hooked. At the start, I preferred the character which was finally played by David Morse. Mine was just described as ‘the baddy’. But I said to myself that, behind the slightly too obvious behaviour of Frank Roberts, there had to be a really complex reason. The filming was extremely interesting … The more so because Sean was very involved. It was there I became friends with Dennis Hopper. After that, the offers arrived.

The movie is one of those "not worth seeing at all without, barely worth seeing with" Viggo type deals.

Unless you're a bratpack fan!

I didn't realize that either. I wonder if it says that on the DVD release, or the old VHS release that it's an HBO production?

But IMDb does list the gross as $6,640,346 (USA)so it had to be a theatrical release, right?

Yes. I don't think it was an HBO movie. I wonder if maybe it was intended to be an HBO movie but was instead a theatrical release? I remember seeing previews for it at the movies and also in the beginnings of VHS movies we rented. I seem to think it was a theatrical release. Also, the "Brat Pack" was such a box office magnet at the time, I think it would have been more likely that it would be released in the theater rather than HBO. I didn't see this until it was on VHS so I can't remember. You can rent some HBO movies on tape, too. Frankly (just between you and I) I don't think it's a good enough movie to be an HBO film hee hee! HBO films are usually very good. I could see Indian Runner being an HBO film. Things like that.

Most of the bratpack movies seemed to me to be before FH. Someone trying to cash in on the success of those young actors?
