I think I've developed a little more sympathy for Snape thanks to the backstory I've heard. He had many people treat him unkindly during his life and I think that affected his outlook on himself to such a degree he didn't think he was really capable of being 'good'.
Oy, to get to the point of analyzing a fictional character.
His upbringing and how he was different and treated unkindly because of it at Hogwarts played into it. It's hard to say how that affected him, you know?
