LOS ANGELES —  Amazon.com Inc. said Tuesday it had booked more than 1 million advance orders for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," scheduled for release in late July.

The online retailer also lowered its price on the book to $17.99 from $18.89. It said it would honor the lower price for customers who had already ordered the book, the seventh in the wildly popular series by J.K. Rowling about a boy wizard and his struggle against the forces of evil.

More than 620,000 copies have been ordered in advance in the United States, with more than 250,000 in the United Kingdom, Amazon (AMZN) said. Advance orders for this book have surpassed those in 2005 for Rowling's sixth release, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

In April, Barnes & Noble Inc. (BKS) said that advance orders for the book had topped 500,000 copies, breaking the bookseller chain's record for the most advance requests in its history.

The book, which is published in the United States by Scholastic Corp. and in Britain by Bloomsbury , officially goes on sale on July 21.

I'll be running to Kroger at midnight the day of release to avoid the crowds and get it ASAP! XD

I have preordered HP books in the past, and even with the free shipping deal, they usually try to get it to you on the release date to be competive with bricks and mortar retailers. I'll probably do the same again with this book.

I've had the occasional movie from Amazon before the release date, but the best has been a movie business based out of Philly that has had DVDs to me the Friday before release dates. :)

I will not preorder from an online place. My mail does not come until about 5pm. I'll get the book at Walmart at midnight and be half done by the time the mail comes that day. (kinda a let down that this is it......the last one)

I keep wondering whether I should order it, or get it from a bookstore. I like the idea of going to a bookstore, but what if they run out??

I love bookstores, but I don't like paying book store prices!

Try a different one? ;)

I'm used to pre-ordering DVDs... not books. :)

The voice of reason!

(I must admit that I hadn't even thought of that... bad, huh?)
