it's interesting reading these older quotes and think how different things would be without LotR

Maybe GI Jane will be the film to make Henry's dad a star; maybe it'll happen with Mortensen's next movie, tentatively titled The Blouse Man, in which he plays a travelling salesman who shakes up the life of a Catskills housewife during the tumultuous summer of 1969. Or maybe neither movie will make him a big deal. Mortensen doesn't worry about it too much. If he gets offered good roles, he'll take them; if not, he'll write poetry and take photographs and travel with his family. And he'll do it quietly.

GI Jane is the movie that brought him to my attention, at least. Didn't WOTM and PM come out around the same time? I remember after falling in love w/ Urgayle/Viggo Mortensen I saw reviews for those two movies on Siskel and Ebert. They both were impressed w/ Viggo's performances. I remember they liked just about EVERYTHING about WOTM.

I'm thinking they were all released about a year apart? APM was the only one I'd seen pre-LotR fame. WOTM must not have gotten much attention because I would've seen that one had it been around... right up my alley, so to speak!

It didn't get much attention. All I saw was the great review on Siskel and Ebert but I never went to see it at the theater b/c I could never find a theater that was showing it! I did not go on the opening week, but maybe a couple of weeks later? So I never saw it until later. Perfect Murder was everywhere though b/c Michael Douglas and Gwenyth Paltrow were in it.

AWOT had a great review in EW at the time too and I remember wanting to see it but it never showed up near me. I think IMDB shows it received very limited release. I don't think I saw Viggo in anything pre-LOTR except for Witness and he was just a cute farmer boy in that. Thank god for LOTR!
