Today is Earth Day, the one day when everyone thinks about the environment. Hopefully, we will all take the opportunity to make some changes. Of course, you can’t change much in a day. But you can set goals to be kinder to the environment in the upcoming year. Here's  National Geographic’s MapMachine for today’s Cool Site. It will give you a view of the entire Earth. There are plenty of maps online these days. And this one has the normal stuff, like satellite photos. But it also is different. You can see how farming and environmental threats affect us. Or, you can see how the world’s land is being used. This is a great resource for everybody concerned about the environment.

It's very ironic that we have a massive sewage spill here - 1,000 litres per second has spilled since Friday afternoon, but the water company kept it quiet until Saturday afternoon when they had to issue public health alerts.

Is Earth Day an international holiday, or a US holiday?

Unfortuately, we need more than an Earth Day- we need an Earth way of life.

Thanks for this. There's a lot of E-Day events in NYC this weekend. Finally got those energy efficient light bulbs and replaced the incandescant ones, they pay for themselves w/ the energy one saves. It's the little steps that add up.

just for your information- some of the energy efficient lightbulbs can interfere with TV remote controls- you can find channels changing at will or the remote not working at all..apparently some of the bulbs work on almost the same frequency as the remotes.

Personally, in my household where hubby and son sit flicking between 24 and various sport channels this is no bad thing I feel!!!!!

Cool map. I was watching Discovery Channel last night. If everyone switched to florescent bulbs we could save many tons of carbon from getting into the air. We use them in almost all our lights. (Some just don't have florescent bulbs in that size yet.) I hope the US is finally starting to realize that time is short to avert global warming disaster. How come the jerks in Washington have to be clubbed over the head with this before they do something?????

Because the DC Dudes are like everyone else... until it directly affects them it doesn't become an issue to them.
