Boy suffers chemical burns at playground

2 1/2 year old hospitalized after playing on slide soaked in industrial strength drain cleaner

A 2 1/2-year old boy suffered severe burns today after playing on a slide doused in a caustic chemical.

The boy's parents rushed the child to Franklin Square Hospital emergency room, where officials said the scent of the acid was so strong that they closed down the emergency room. The child was transferred from there to Johns Hopkins Hospital's pediatric burn unit.

Baltimore Police officials said at least two bottles of industrial strength drain cleaner were stolen from Victory Villa Elementary School and then used to soak playground equipment outside the Middle River school.

Division Chief Michael W. Robinson, a spokesman for the Baltimore County fire department, said the boy suffered third-degree chemical burns and is being treated for his injuries at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Robinson said the incident, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. today, came after Hazmat crews around the country received warnings about the possibility of "Drano bombs" being used.

Police don't have leads on a suspect or suspects yet, but any individuals involved would face first-degree assault and burglary charges, said Baltimore County police spokeswoman Sgt. Vickie Warehime.

Jesus Christ! What is wrong with people? I'm just sick and horrified. That poor child and his parents. I don't know what would be worse...finding out some kids did it as a "prank" or that it is some terroristic attack. A freakin' playground!

I'll have nightmares, I'm sure.
