Do You Remember Rock \'N\' Roll Radio?
2007-02-11.mp3 (128 MB)

(by all means share this link, I don't plan to upload it again, and will be deleting the file shortly)

Show info:

This show is about the music that led to, and influenced punk rock. Not just the velvet underground and iggy, all of it. I will play a lot of 60s garage rock, as it was the first music to be called punk. Also, a lot of old coutry/folk ie Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline etc. This music is what a lot of punk musicians, especially in the L.A. secne, listened to. Also, i will play a lot of surf and rockabilly, for the same reason. Additionally, there will be a large amount of early (late 60s/early 70s) glam and metal as this is the movement that actually evolved into punk. I will also play some actual punk, mostly early(70s) stuff. To show all the influences on punk i will also play punk's contemporary 'bad' music which it rebelled against (hair bands, boston, journey, foreigner, etc). I might also read a poem or two by people like chick bukowski, kerouc, ginsberg and other beat poets. All in all a radio show you can have a great time listening to and come away having learned something about the history of punk [sic].

He reminds me of a friend of my son.

I would have loved to have heard a bit of the previous week... the intro to 'X' :D.

Lousy taste in music must run in the family. There's maybe five decent songs in that whole playlist. Also, I would expect a child of Viggo's to be more articulate.

But quite the typical kid, judging by my son's friends! (I think boys tend to be lazier than girls in speech.)

Interesting playlist. Patsy Cline???? Hmm. Yes, agreed on his lack of articulation. Wonder how he's adjusting and if he's able to keep his profile on the DL?

Thanks for posting this, Wowie. I admit to being rather curious! Not sure I'll have time to listen till this weekend, though -- will it still be up by then?

The sendspace links are usually around for a week after the last activity... so you'll be good to go for the weekend.

I liked his choice of music - apart from the country music, its almost exactly the same as Simon (my 19-year old) would choose, and a lot that I would choose as well. It was great to hear the 'Small Faces', though I did find it strange to hear them described as one of the influences on punk - but then American punk is totally different to what we would define as punk in the UK.

Henry has obviously has a really good grounding in a diverse world of music and isn't hemmed in by stereotypes.

I plugged in to the station yesterday morning (afternoon) my time and found two equally rambling girls who were playing some gorgeous world music.

For a college station and teenagers, I think they do really well.

Very good practice for the kids - especially those contemplating going into a related media field!
