I almost became a Simian Occupational Therapist. There is a specialty within my profession that trains monkeys how to be companions for the disabled.

That would be so cool!

Do you know anyone that went into a field like that?

I don't. The main area of this specialty is based in CT, which is why I never really pursued it. I still keep the thought in my cap for the future...

What sort of disabled folks are they trained to deal with?

I still have to go back and find the commercial with this weblink in it from last night.

All different physical disabilities. They train them to retrieve things for their masters, etc.

In fact, Dian Fossy (Gorillas in the Mist) was an OT (they made her a PT in the movie- Ugh!).

Here is a little something on monkey companions:

Amazing jobs wwowie. I imagine monkeys are pretty difficult to tame as they're so smart, they must be very willful (and they like to throw feces!)

Organ courier? I guess you can't take a break and have a beer at a bar in the midst of delivery and leave the heart with the bartender.

I don't know if I have the patience to work with chimps in general, and I'm quite sure I wouldn't be happy to work with them in a lab where they're being experimented on. Yipes!

I was the caretaker of a rat colony in a pysch lab when I was a freshman in college. No vivisection or anything there, though, they did some drug experiments on body temperature and taught them to run through mazes. The worst abuse they got was when a big male rat bit me when I was getting him out of his cage. I threw that nasty motherfucker against the wall like he was a baseball. Being a rat, he just scurried away like nothing happened. *eyeroll*

Disection was about the worst of it with me. Yuck.

The only animal I ever dissected was a frog in bio in high school. You'll think I'm sick, but I loved it. There wasn't a part on that frog that I didn't look at. They called me "The Mad Prober". I even saved his eyes! Yuck! Being that I have a mionr in forensics, little grosses me out. Hmm, personal assistant, for Hanso, yeah... no!

I got thru the worm and frog dissection in biology but when they showed us the pink, naked, infant-like fetal pig curled up in the sink I lost it. I can't even remember whether I got out of dissecting it or not I was SO grossed out. I don't think they use those in high school bio anymore do they?
