Viggo Mortensen ("The Lord of the Rings") is reteaming with director David Cronenberg for Eastern Promises at Focus Features and BBC Films, reports Variety.

The project, written by Steve Knight (Dirty Pretty Things), is a London thriller that centers on a nurse investigating the identity of a Russian girl who dies in childbirth. The nurse stumbles into danger when she learns the woman was a prostitute involved in sex trafficking.

Mortensen plays a man caught up in the Russian mob.

Mortensen recently completed work in Alatriste opposite Elena Anaya. He last starred in Cronenberg's A History of Violence.

I got this in a Google alert today and I was a bit surprised. I haven't heard about this project before. Did you know about that? Is Viggo doing this?

Just saw it @ [livejournal.com profile] coming_soon and in the Google alert. Information about the movie isn't even at the peon's version of IMDb yet.

Anybody 'do' IMDb Pro?

He gets to work on his Russian accent it sounds like. Guess he'll be watching a lot of Rocky and Bullwinkle <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v153/wowie/emoticon/biggrin2.gif>

I wonder if seeing Shining Star yesterday had anything to do with research. Compare plots:

Shining Star:

Originally produced at London’s Royal Court Theater to critical acclaim, Shining City is set in Dublin, where a guilt-ridden man reaches out to a therapist after seeing the ghost of his recently deceased wife. Wrestling with his own demons, the therapist can only do so much to help. Routine visits between the two men quickly become a gripping struggle to survive, changing both of them for the rest of their lives.

Eastern Promises:

The project, written by Steve Knight (Dirty Pretty Things), is a London thriller that centers on a nurse investigating the identity of a Russian girl who dies in childbirth. The nurse stumbles into danger when she learns the woman was a prostitute involved in sex trafficking.

Maybe I am just imagining things...

I'm excited about

1. Viggo re-teaming with Cronenberg. It's actually quite an honor for Viggo; DC doesn't usually use main actors in more than one film, even though he's wildly popular to work with. Only Jeremy Irons has paired with him twice.

2. Viggo filming in London, doing a project in English

I'm not excited about

1. Another mobster-themed film. *SNORE*

2. Viggo with some shitty attempt at a Russian accent.

Explains all the Russian poetry we've been seeing on Perceval. Maybe Viggo will try to learn Russian to get a better accent? He is a Meryl Streep devotee.

*hand in the air*

I did Russian at school. I did. Can I help him? Can I? Can I?

He needs you! Go to him...or at least let him stay at your flat while he's in town.

Me, too, me too! I did Russian in school too. We could take turns. You can have the day shift, I'll take the nights. LOL.

2008, eh? Well, he definitely chooses his projects with the utmost care, apparently. He won't just rush into just any film. It has to be the right film.

And if it's directed by DC, it should be quite a goodie.

2008 may seem like a long time off but in reality, it is less than 2 years. they probably don't start shooting 'til the end of this year. the way DC works, figure at least 6-8mo of post-production and all that other stuff. we're looking at end of next year before the movie is in the can and ready for distribution. let's just hope it's early 2008.

I wonder if this means Eastern Promises is superceding Maps to the Stars now. It must...there's no time to do both. Last I heard, Maps to the Stars was casting. I betcha hooking Viggo for EP is what made it jump the queue.

Maps probably didn't have a star chomping at the bit for it, and Serendipity Films (the producers of Maps) has a couple of other higher profile projects in the immediate future, so maybe Maps wasn't getting the tender loving care it needed to give it a push. I hope DC still does Maps, though. I'd like to see an industry satire from him; I hope this isn't the beginning of a gangster phase.

Very exciting news! Hmmm, De Niro and Scorcese, DDL and Jim Sheridan, Viggo and Cronenberg? Sounds like a good partnership to me. The film seems more like a thriller than a straight ahead gangster movie. Obviously gangsters of some kind will be involved in sex trafficing but it won't be Goodfellas. Will Viggo be playing a father/lover seeking the abducted girl/woman? I love it, Viggo gets to be intense, get the word out about a terrible underground crime and maybe take his shirt off. It takes place in London so he could be either an American or Brit interacting w/ Russians, not necessarily Russian himself, so no shitty accent, although I think he's up to it.

This is great news. I loved Dirty Pretty Things. Great story once again set in the underworld of London. But not in an unrealistic Guy Ritchie kind of way. I've seen a couple "mobster" related pieces set around people trafficing - they were excellent.
Got high hopes for this one.

Oh good, more DC! I think he brings out the best in Viggo. And they so obviously enjoy working together, it was almost inevitable, if the right project came along. Yippee! :D

I was lucky enough to talk with David Cronenberg last fall at the HoV post-premiere party in LA. I asked him about working with Viggo again. He said that he had been talking with Viggo about another film, but Viggo still hadn't said yes. I didn't post anything about this part of our conversation because I was superstitious and was afraid if I said something it wouldn't happen, that it would jinx any deal (just like my ability to kill threads.) I wonder if this is the project he was talking about.

Pretty cool to have spoken to Cronenberg about projects!

I've been looking on IMDb wondering if any of DC's projects that are as yet uncasted could involve Viggo :).
