On my first night in LA, I attend a New Zealand government-backed celebration of "Kiwis in film" at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I sit between Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen. Elijah is wearing an outfit designed by Libertine. Viggo Mortensen appears to be wearing an outfit designed by a geography teacher. And this is why we love him.

A drunk woman, who is having trouble staying inside her strapless dress, sits on Elijah's knee. Having been an actor since he was five, he is unfeasibly polite. She decides not to sit on Viggo: he radiates such intensity that even a woman who is drunk on champagne knows to back the hell off.
