Just thinking out loud about reposting  / crediting  / and privacy issues, since it's come up a bit with some recent pics in a couple of places.

I see a lot of "please credit me if you repost", and while the first person always tends to credit, beyond that it usually gets lost where pictures originally come from.  Sometimes things aren't credited in the first place either at all or correctly, and that does put the one who's posted in a bad light. It irritates me to no end when I've credited the proper source and one repost later the credit is given to someone/someplace else. Another annoyance,crediting Live Journal? At last count there were over 10.5 million live journals.

So other than a watermark, is there any way to make sure whomever needs to be credited maintains that credit? Probably not.  Sad thing is, some folks lift the big glorious hi res pictures that are out there, and sell other people's pictures on eBay. Talk about criminal!

I get the impression most folks seem to think anything found on the web is public property anyway, and don't seem to give a rat's ass about saving where something came from just so long as they save it (invariably a picture), and so they save whatever and post it in six months when they've forgotten where it came from, and hopefully whomever they 'borrowed' it from doesn't realize it's even been lifted.

Then there's the issue of who's fair game to post.  Viggo? Henry? Other celebs? Fans in the pic? How do you know if someone is a 'fan', or is in actuality a celebrity? (Look at the invasive pics of Dom / Evie / Viggo / Henry & who knows who else from last autumn. Who the heck are those other people?) Most likely there's no clue who the other folks are, so is it in your best interest post anyone else? Even with their permission? Pictures get around, this I know for a fact, after meeting two gals who didn't realize their picture with a certain actor/artist had traveled the internet and were a bit disconcerted they were recognized.

Then again, maybe folks allow their pictures to be used on a public site because they want to be recognized?

Hey, I know you! I saw your picture on the ______ site!

This is interesting. A couple of shots used in recent faces fit Alatriste, I thought were fans photos first time around. It seems strange to see them in with papparazi shots. Or am I wrong?

Credits get lost, always, and slapping some big ass ugly text all across the pics, or simply not posting at all seems to be the only solution. Sadly.

I'm all for credit, it's the polite thing, and the right thing to do. But. There are things that bug me. Like when a poster posts a pic, with no mention of photographer or anything else, and you know they're not a professional photographer and didn't take the pic themselves, and the poster is asking for the credit for the picture. Or even worse, when a poster lifts a pic from an official site and then demand they (the poster) be credited. That's like, "BWUH?".

w/in a fandom it's just a matter of courtesy I would think- to credit that is.

As far as lifting the pictures and selling them on Ebay that's just low.

Fans in pictures, depends- if they're just in the background- fair game I would think. But if it's pictures that they took of themselves w/ him (like the Miyelo girls) I think they made a mistake of putting that up in an unprotected area where everyone could see it and it got around. I viewed it first in a protected area b/c the reposter didn't want to post it in a public area but eventually I noticed it was in other public places.

They all get muddled, don't they? I think it's a fine line between the actual papparazzi photos and the fans with the nice cameras with zoom lens. The latter just doesn't take them for profit, but they're still very intrusive and unwanted by the celeb in question in most cases.

Those hi-res pics that Faces Fit post get passed around to various message boards, and I think the eBay sellers know where to go now to find them for their own profit.

I think the admin of the board where the Miyelo girls (poor things, they've been branded!) first posted their pictures was the one who suggested they remove themselves from the pics. And in talking to one of the girls, she said she got an unbelievable number of PMs asking her for more information.

Reason I wonder about the latter is because I've seen pictures recently where I did recognize someone in them.

I know I have my moments where I forget to credit where pictures come from, but hopefully I remember more than not.

One thing I think is funny... 'branding' screencaps. Anybody can screencap, and most are no better than any other caps out there.

Must admit I do sometimes put something in the corner, though, when I've capped to see where things end up ;-).

I sometimes get pissed off when I see my caps floating round - and I can always spot them by the way that I have cropped them.

But beyond that, it didn't really bother me until I heard about Der's pics being sold on Ebay and found that some were posted cropped to take his name out.

I have seen pictures of Viggo with various people in them, that I would never repost anywhere to protect their identity.

I've also seen pictures of Viggo fans on the net - some notorious ones (not the girlies in Washington), but others who are well-known for their behaviour and its quite useful as you would know who to keep well away from in a book signing queue if ever you got to attend one.

There is a fine line on this one. I think if you know the person who took/screencapped the picture, then a credit should be posted - though of course as these pics are reposted, the credits disappear - that's the nature of the human beast.

With regards to Der. He is a semi-professional photographer and in that respect his photos should not be for sale on ebay (unless he is to benefit directly). He is most generous with his photos and it would be a shame if he had to restrict their viewing because of the greed of a few people trying to make a quick buck.

In general, I think there are a mixture of people who just don't realise (newbies) and people with no manners who don't credit in an attempt to wind people up and get attention.

The web is really like the "wild west" in terms of ownership, copyrights, etc. It's nearly impossible to trace the origin of a lot of text/images unless names are embedded in the material. Having to rely on the honor system and people's memories is bound to fail but I guess it's up to the original poster to provide mechanisms (watermarks, low rez dpi, limited distributions, etc.) to provide some protections.
To the ebay seller who stole Derek's photos - shame on you.

I think if you post something online you should beware of the ramifications. Anybody can save pictures, text, etc for whatever reason and use them elsewhere. And extend that to watch what your personal info you put online... it can be quite easy to track/look up from the bits and pieces that people offer. And anything's available if you're willing to pay for the information.

Look at the sneaky way folks grabbed the other pictures in my Photobucket from Spain, trying the consecutive numbers to see what other pictures existed. Oh well.

The photos has sequential names like Viggo123, Viggo124, Viggo125 etc. The ones I didn't post they guessed and posted elsewhere. Rude. :-/

Yes, I've never understood that. If I want screencaps for some graphics I'm working on I'm sure as hell not going to use any branded ones. Doing it sometimes for tracking reasons I can see, it's probably interesting to see how far they travel.
